Libertarianism: for and against

Call for Presentation Abstracts
MARCH 24-25, 2011

The Mississippi Philosophical Association (MPA) is soliciting abstracts for presentations at its annual meeting, to be held March 24-25 (Thursday-Friday), on the Mississippi State University campus in Starkville, MS.

This year’s conference theme is “Libertarianism: For and Against.” Presentations that address any aspect of libertarianism—from theoretical political and ethical concerns to specific policy issues, and using purely philosophical or interdisciplinary methods—will be considered for the program.

The invited keynote speaker for the conference is Matt Welch, Editor-in-Chief, Reason Magazine, Washington, D.C. Welch's work has appeared in The Washington Post, Columbia Journalism Review, Los Angeles Daily News, Orange County Register, LA Weekly, ESPN.com, Salon.com, Wired, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, The Daily Star of Beirut, and dozens of other publications. His keynote address is generously supported by the Mississippi State University Institute for Humanities and Department of Philosophy and Religion, as well as the MPA.

Each presenter will be given 50 minutes on the program, of which 30 minutes will be allotted to reading the paper or presenting the material, with the remaining 20 minutes dedicated to audience discussion and presenter responses. A data projector and computer will be available for those who wish to use power point or other visual media.

Conference events include a Thursday evening dinner (at cost to participants), a Friday night banquet (payable at registration) and a closing reception at the Bickle-Bernstein farm in Webster County, Mississippi (45 minute drive west of Starkville) on Saturday, March 26. There will be a small conference registration fee ($20) for presenters and a banquet fee (to be determined). The Saturday closing reception is free to all presenters. Transportation to the reception will be available.

While the MPA is a regional organization, we seek broad participation in this conference. Philosophers from all institutions and locations are welcome to submit abstracts. Starkville is served by the Golden Triangle regional airport (GTR), with Northwest and Delta flights daily from Memphis and Atlanta International airports. Transportation to and from the GTR airport for presenters can be arranged. Daily transportation for presenters between the conference hotel and the MSU campus will be provided. Parking passes for the MSU campus can be ordered in advance.

Submissions should include a title page with presentation title, author’s name, institutional affiliation, email address, and postal address. A 500 word abstract should be prepared for blind review and sent as a second page. Please, send title page and abstract in Word (.doc or .docx) or pdf formats only.

All submissions must be sent by email to John Bickle at jb1681@msstate.edu. Submissions must be sent by or before 11:59 PM (central standard time), February 17, 2011. Please send any questions regarding submissions to Bickle at the same email address just mentioned.

Authors will be notified regarding submission acceptance or rejection by February 24, 2011. Hotel reservations, and travel and campus parking information, will be sent out to presenters at that time.
